Diabetes Forum
National Diabetes Week was held from Sunday 11 July 2010 to Saturday 17 July 2010. Our gym and group fitness instructor Jo Vasterink took time out of her busy schedule to speak at the Annual Diabetes Forum on Tuesday 13 July at the Shepparton Football Club Rooms. The forum is instrumental in helping to raise awareness of the effect which Diabetes has on our community and looks at ways in which the disease can be prevented and managed.
Jo talked about the importance of exercise and how physical activity plays a large role in maintaining good health and preventing diseases such as Diabetes. Jo also facilitated a guided physical activity, demonstrating the use of Thera-bands. Jo looked like an absolute professional up on stage and it was a real credit to the time and effort she put into her preparation.
An estimated 275 Australians develop diabetes every day. This statistic is staggering! Diabetes is the epidemic of the 21st century and the driver of premature death and serious complications including heart attack, stroke, kidney damage, blindness and amputation.
Being overweight, especially around your waistline, makes it more likely you will develop diabetes. Measuring your waistline is a great way of checking your risk for a number of diseases.
In general: • Women should aim for a waist circumference less than 80 cm • Men should aim for less than 94 cm.
For a person with diabetes exercise helps: • Insulin to work better, which will improve your diabetes management • You control your weight • Lower your blood pressure • Reduce your risk of heart disease • Reduce stress.
Everybody benefits from regular exercise and if you have diabetes, or are at risk of diabetes it plays an important role in keeping you healthy.
For more information on diabetes and how it can affect you, please visit the Diabetes Australia website at www.diabetesaustralia.com.au

Tour De Aquamoves
The great cycling race that is Tour De Aquamoves is well underway. RPM and Xpress enthusiasts are furiously cramming as many classes into the day as they can in order to win the coveted line honours.
Tour De Aquamoves patterns the Tour De France's 360km ride across the French countryside. Each RPM class equates to 20km and every Xpress class is equivalent to 10km. Blood, sweat, tears, early 6am mornings and sometimes three classes per day are poured into finishing the gruelling distance.
Congratulations to Fiona Sawyer who has completed the distance first! Jennie Patterson has finished the tour in second place, while Elyse Graham and Steve Maskell are following close behind. Well done to all participants who have taken up the challenge to improve their exercise habits!

Body Jam! - the Zumba Alternative

Gym and Sauna Etiquette
| |
Cameron Vella wipes down the bench press after working out
|
Please remember that when you are working out in the gym, you must have a towel with you at all times. It is important to be mindful of people who will be using the equipment after you have finished. Using a towel whilst you work out and ensuring that you spray and wipe down equipment after every use will ensure a clean and hygienic gym experience for the next person.
It is also compulsory to use a towel at all times whilst in the sauna. It has been noted that lately many people have been neglecting to do this. It is also unacceptable to use the sauna wearing your gym attire. Whilst wearing shorts and t-shirts is permitted in the sauna, you must ensure that you shower and change before using the sauna if you are coming from the gym.
Following these simple practices will allow everyone to have an enjoyable experience when using the facility. We look forward to seeing a significant improvement in these practises.

Platinum Pool Award
| |
Operations Coordinator Sean Harrap and Programs Coordinator Diana Baxter are very proud of the high honour
|
Shepparton Aquamoves has just been awarded Life Saving Victoria's prized Platinum Pool award for the outstanding provision of safety at an aquatic facility.
As part of the award the centre had to go through a rigorous series of assessments to ensure that it met Life Saving Victoria's criteria for a Platinum Pool accreditation.
Pools who have qualified for the Platinum Pool award are certified and provided with internal marketing materials that can be utilised within the facility entrance. The accreditation is valid for twelve months and forms an important part of the facilities overall safety and continual improvement strategy.
Programs Coordinator Diana Baxter says a team effort has ensured the success .
"All staff have worked very hard to make sure we continue to maintain the facilities and adhere to procedures and supervision levels at very high standards. The achievement of the platinum pool award shows that Aquamoves is one of the top facilities in the state and we are all very proud of this."

Group Fitness Studio Temperatures
The onset of winter and the changing temperatures have presented some challenges when maintaining comfortable workout conditions in the group fitness studios and RPM room. This has been compounded by the air temperature regulator experiencing technical errors. A technician has now resolved the problem and we are hopeful that after listening to participant feedback, a balance has been achieved which takes into consideration different times of the day as well as low impact and strenuous classes.
We would like to thank you for your patience in this matter over the past few weeks and encourage you to keep us informed about your comfort levels so that an enjoyable experience can be ensured.

Orientation Classes
Ever thought about doing BODY STEP but feel out of your depth?
Or do you need help with your technique?
If you answered ‘yes' to either of these questions then Orientation BODY STEP is for you!
The class will take place on Monday 2 August (5pm - 5.30pm) and will cost $7.85 for casual users, but is free for all members!
During the class our qualified instructors will help participants with technique and the basics of the Step class. It will be a great way for beginners to be introduced to Step.
Long term member Elyse Graham attends Body Pump and RPM classes regularly, but when participating in Body Combat classes in the past, felt there was too much to take in. So when the opportunity came up to do an orientation Body Combat class last month, she jumped at the opportunity.
"The Body Combat Orientation Class was great because it broke everything down, allowing you time to actually process what you were doing. The environment was supportive and everyone's new so you're all at the same level." After completing the class Elyse is now ready to tackle Body Combat head on. "You leave feeling far more confident. I'll know what I'm doing in a real Body Combat class now, I'm ready to rock and roll."
Places for the Body Step Orientation Class are limited, so contact customer service now on 5832 9400 to make sure you don't miss out on this unique opportunity.

TRIAL: No Booking System
| |
RPM participants will be asked to attach their tickets to the front of their bikes
|
From Monday 9 August we will trial all RPM and Thump classes without a booking system. We hope this will rectify the current issues we are experiencing as a result of the existing system.
Bookings made for next week will apply as per normal -you will however, be unable to book for the following week.
From Monday 9 August there will be no need to book for RPM and Thump classes, and attendance will occur on a first in, first served basis. Please note tickets will only be given out in the hour before a class and not before.
All RPM participants will now be asked to attach their tickets to the front of their bikes (using the clips provided) and must keep them there for the duration of the class.
Thank you for your anticipated cooperation with this.

Wednesday Night Vive
| |
Joy Demase loves attending Wednesday night's Body Vive classes
Body Vive Instructors Toni Leader and Jo Vasterink dressed in their Red Nose Day themed costumes
|
Forget Friday night live! We've got Wednesday night Vive! Wednesday night's 6.30pm Body Vive adds an extra dimension to the group fitness timetable with two vibrant instructors taking to the stage, often wearing costumes to celebrate themed fitness nights. In the past, Red Nose Day, the Soccer World Cup, St Patricks Day, 80s and an Easter theme (in which everyone wore bunny tails) have all made their appearance in the group fitness studios for an atmospheric and fun class which helps to transport participants to a whole new world as they exercise.
Member Joy Demase has participated in the Body Vive classes since they first commenced at Aquamoves. Joy decided to try Body Vive after seeing an article about the new class in the paper and has since made it a regular weekly activity. "I love exercising to the great music and we have two excellent instructors in Toni and Jo. They have fun and when they're both up on stage together and work off each other."
Joy says that anyone thinking about doing Body Vive should come along and "be in it! Give it a go. New participants are always made welcome and the instructors take time to chat with all participants before and after the class to receive feedback and answer any questions."
Body Vive doesn't just run on Wednesday nights. Visit www.aquamoves.com.au to view the entire group fitness timetable.
Les Mills' Body Vive is a full-body workout that leaves you feeling thoroughly invigorated, rejuvenated and energized. Using the Vive ball and Vive tube, you'll enjoy a 55-minute group fitness workout which includes cardio exercise, resistance work, core training, mobility and balance. Great music from the ‘70s, ‘80s, '90s and today provides the perfect soundtrack to your workout.
