Aquamoves News - December 2009 -Part 2

Starting Them Young

Jenny Spence has been a swimming instructor at Aquamoves for four years now, working with adults and children aged four years and above. For Jenny, being in the water is a way of life and something that she loves.

"I've always been a swimmer and I love seeing the enjoyment that kids have in the water. They gain valuable skills that may one day save their life."

Recently Jenny furthered her skills by obtaining her Infant Aquatic qualifications. This enables her to teach children in the six month to four year age bracket. Initially Jenny undertook a weekend training course in Echuca. The focus of the course was on water awareness and introducing children to the water.

It was Jenny's desire to be part of the teaching process at an earlier stage of development that led her to take on the extra qualification.

"Learning to handle little people in the water that are unable to support themselves on land is huge. I'm still quite nervous about it, but it will be great to watch the kids start out from a young age and see them improve as they become older and more confident in the water. I think they're so cute- I get to have fun with them and then at the end of the lesson I can hand them back" she laughs.

A few years ago Michael Grossi was involved in a serious accident which left him wheelchair bound and unable to speak. But far from shutting himself away and giving up on life, Michael has fought to retain those skills which were stolen from him.

For the past five months Michael has been attending the gym on a regular basis. He began by seeing gym instructor Garth Osborne who created a program for him based upon his goals.

Over four months Michael has undertaken a variety of exercises focusing on strengthening his muscles.

Using a high tech machine which enables him to communicate, Michael said that he had no concerns about coming to the gym. "I was pumped because I wanted to go- I wanted to exercise to get back on my feet and walking."

Before coming to Aquamoves, Michael needed assistance to stand and lift his hands above his head. Now his legs have strengthened to the point where he can stand on his own and even exercise on his feet.

"Before I needed help-not anymore!" says Michael with a big grin before describing the first time he stood on his own as like "winning a Ferrari."

Garth says that Michael's determination is behind his amazing progress.

"He works really hard - all the credit goes to him. His improvement is out of sight."

Michael plans to continue with his program and Garth is gradually increasing the intensity. "My goal is to be more on my feet for my little girl and I want to walk on my own."

Weight No More!

Kim is enjoying her new healthier lifestyle

Kim is enjoying her new healthier lifestyle

Fitness Instructor Suz Reilly says people should not be daunted or feel as though they have to be at a certain fitness level before participating in Extreme Measures. ‘That's the reason for doing the program in the first place' she says. ‘The main focus is on getting moving. You've gotta move to lose.'

Suz believes the supportive team environment which is both positive and encouraging, is what makes Extreme Measures so unique. ‘Sometimes half the battle with exercise is feeling comfortable in your surroundings. It really helps if you're part of a supportive group. People develop great friendships out of the program. You will walk out after each session feeling empowered'.

Extreme Measures is governed by a holistic approach with constant support provided by qualified fitness instructors, a nutritionist and a health coach. The nutritionist educates you about healthy eating and eating for weight loss and the professional Health Coach teaches you how to set measurable and achievable goals in relation to your nutrition and exercise.

As a past participant Kim really enjoyed the intensity of Extreme Measures and being pushed to work as hard as she could. "Slowly but surely you see the centimetres coming down. It provides you with results you can measure. You get to know yourself a lot better and then you just watch everything come together."

For more information on how Extreme Measures can change your life, contact Aquamoves on 5832 9400.

Gym Assessments

Laura Veal believes gym assessments are essential for success

Gym Instructor Toni Leader believes Fiona has benefited greatly from gym assessments

Gym Instructor Toni Leader believes Fiona has benefited greatly from gym assessments

Qualified gym instructors Laura Veal and Toni Leader insist assessments are essential if you want to achieve sustainable results.

"Assessments are about receiving one on one support and guidance from a qualified instructor" says Toni. "Your exercise regime is planned for you and the program is specifically designed to suit your needs and interests."

"Assessments ensure you keep motivated and don't get bored with your program. They also prevent plateaus and help to avoid overtraining and the resulting injuries" says Laura. "It's important to have your technique reviewed to make sure you're getting maximum results for your effort."

Listed below is what happens during an assessment.

• Meet and welcome.
• Discuss exercise and medical history.
• Talk about goals and what you're hoping to achieve.
• Take blood pressure.
• Take girth measurements (in cm) of shoulders, chest, waist, hips, arms and legs.
• Skin fold test (optional) -Callipers measure body fat percentage.
• Measure body fat percentage and weight.
• General chat about nutrition -good things to eat, changes to make to diet etc.
• Talk about and design weights program or group fitness class program.
• Get warmed up by doing a short cardio workout.
• Run through how to use weights or group fitness class program.

At any time during your assessment you are encouraged to ask questions. If at the completion of your assessment you are unsure about anything, simply book in for a follow up run through.

Aquamoves member Fiona Sawyer insists assessments have guaranteed her weight loss.
"I started coming to Aquamoves because I was unhealthy and tired. Plus two doctors had told me I should consider having my stomach stapled."

Fiona started out weighing 152 kilograms and is now down to 114. "You receive an instant sense of support and encouragement from instructors -they are amazing."

Laura says that many people are put off assessments believing that they will be forced into the gym when they prefer doing classes. "This is not the case" she says. "We can help plan classes and ensure you're receiving a full body workout. You need to keep shocking the body to get constant results and we're here to provide that assistance. We won't force you to do a class like BodyStep or BodyJam if you feel you're uncoordinated."

*Please note that assessments are complimentary with all Aquamoves Gym Memberships.
